Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA)

Founded in 1977, CASA is the official 501c3 domestic violence center based in Pinellas County, FL. We operate the area’s 24-hour hotline and emergency shelter; non-residential programs, such as support groups, economic empowerment and legal advocacy; Child Protective Investigative Team support; community and corporate training; and the CASA Peacemakers anti-bullying and healthy relationship school curriculum.

POSITION TITLE: Youth Advocate 1

Major & Essential Functions: To provide support to survivors, youth, and families residing at shelter with childcare, youth support groups, crisis counseling, safety planning, basic needs, and resources.

Work Environment Expectations: This position operates within a shared office environment in a residential facility. The role involves a combination of office-based work and physical, hands-on responsibilities that support daily shelter operations and resident needs. Staff must be prepared for flexibility, mobility, and frequent interaction with staff, participants, and external stakeholders, as well as tasks such as transporting residents, packing and moving belongings, cleaning and organizing spaces, and replenishing household or program supplies as needed.

Additional Position Responsibilities:

  • Monitor security cameras and maintain general awareness of shelter safety and operations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of areas designated for participant use, including shared spaces, rooms, and program areas.
  • Perform tasks related to participant intake preparation and exits, including room setup, packing, organizing, and cleaning.
  • Ensure basic needs supplies are stocked and available within program areas.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining shared spaces, including specialized areas such as the kennel, and support care of participant pets as needed.
  • Complete general operational checklists and assist with day-to-day shelter functions not directly tied to victim services.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding program needs, concerns, and updates, and participate in case reviews and team coordination activities.
  • Assist with coverage across program areas and support broader organizational needs as assigned.

General Duties:

  • Attend and participate in CASA staff meetings, required trainings, and special projects designated by supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in ongoing training opportunities.
  • Assist with training and supervision of volunteers/interns.
  • Complete special projects and presentations as requested.
  • Keep supervisor informed of successes, barriers, concerns, and performance issues.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent education/life experience preferred, or a minimum of one-year proven success in a current CASA direct service position,
  • Experience working with survivors of domestic violence or other crisis related experience preferred.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current community resources and have the ability to maintain working relationships with agencies.
  • Ability to function independently and work cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Knowledge of abnormal psychology and non-violent parenting techniques preferred.
  • Ability to climb stairs, lift up to fifty pounds, and carry children.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends as necessary.
  • A willingness to drive agency vehicles as needed.
  • Ability to function independently and work cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Valid Florida State Driver’s License and auto insurance to be verified annually.
  • Participate in a background check upon employment.
  • Training and experience in domestic violence preferred.
  • Agree to work a flexible schedule when required, which may include changing schedules to ensure case management coverage, due to illness, absence, vacation of other staff members, or a natural disaster.
