Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA)
Founded in 1977, CASA is the official 501c3 domestic violence center based in Pinellas County, FL. We operate the area’s 24-hour hotline and emergency shelter; non-residential programs, such as support groups, economic empowerment and legal advocacy; Child Protective Investigative Team support; community and corporate training; and the CASA Peacemakers anti-bullying and healthy relationship school curriculum.

 

Position Title:      Peacemaker Youth Educator      

Reports To:          Community & Staff Engagement Specialist 

Major Function:       To provide outreach services to community youth, teens, and adults. Facilitate presentations to the area schools, youth programs, and other community organizations.  

FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt 

Work Environment ExpectationsThis position works out of a shared office space within the Peacemaker program located at the residential shelter and also functions in classroom-based settings throughout local schools and community-based youth programming. The role requires flexibility to move between office, shelter, school, and community environments while providing trauma-informed support, education, and services to children, youth, and families. 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Create and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all participants.  
  • Create and maintain a curriculum, and a presentation style that is conducive to children’s optimum growth and development. 
  • Coordinate services with area schools to provide a continuum of care. 
  • Provide training to schools and school personnel in the areas of peaceful teen     and pre-teen relationships and domestic violence. 
  • Provide a program to meet the needs of the children to include non-violent  communication, dealing appropriately with anger, and domestic violence. 
  • Maintain records and statistics of activities for program.  
  • Provide presentations to youth, teens, and adults in various settings throughout the community. 
  • Provide Shelter Youth Center coverage.  
  • Ensure that youth assessments and developmentally appropriate safety plans are conducted within 72 hours of entrance into shelter. 
  • Ensure youth service files are accurate and in compliance with funders. 
  • Assist with needs of families in shelter, including enrollment of children in appropriate schools and/or daycare. 
  • Represent agency at community meetings affecting the program and report to the Peacemaker Manger. 
  • Assist with youth activities across various CASA locations. 

 General Duties: 

  • Attend and participate in CASA staff meetings, required trainings, and special projects designated by supervisor. 
  • Attend and participate in ongoing training opportunities. 
  • Assist with training and supervision of volunteers/interns. 
  • Complete special projects and presentations as requested. 
  • Keep supervisor informed of successes, barriers, concerns, and performance issues. 
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to treat residents, volunteers, and co-workers in a respectful manner at all times. 

 Qualifications: 

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in related human services field or equivalent life experience.  A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience working with children or 2 years of college, or the ability to attend a child focused training approved by JWB within the first 90 days of hire. 
  • Eligible for level 2 screening with Pinellas County School Board. 
  • Knowledge of abnormal psychology and non-violent parenting techniques. 
  • Agree to participate in Child Abuse Registry review. 
  • Ability to climb stairs, lift up to fifty pounds, and carry children. 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends as necessary.  
  • A willingness to drive agency vehicles as needed. 
  • Ability to function independently and work cooperatively as a member of a team. 
  • Valid Florida State Driver’s License and auto insurance to be verified annually. 
  • Participate in a background check upon employment. 
  • Training and experience in domestic violence preferred.
