Scams Targeting Domestic Violence Survivors: What to Know

Scams targeting domestic violence survivors have been reported across multiple states, according to a September 17 alert from the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office, with callers posing as law enforcement officers or court officials and demanding money related to survivors’ cases. At CASA Pinellas, we want survivors to feel informed and supported. Here’s what to look out for and what you can do if you receive a suspicious call.

Scammers May Falsely Claim That a Survivor Must:

• Make an immediate payment to post bond for their alleged abuser.
• Pay a filing or processing fee over the phone for a protective order.
• Pay for electronic monitoring before their alleged abuser can be released.
• Send money to cover supposed supply shortages at a jail or prison to prevent their alleged abuser’s release.

Why These Scams Seem Believable:

These calls can seem convincing because scammers may use details from court records to make their requests sound official. Knowing information about a survivor’s case does not mean the caller is legitimate. Scammers use that information to create fear and urgency, pressuring survivors to send money before they have a chance to verify the request.

What Should You Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call?

• End the call and verify the request. Contact the court or law enforcement agency using a trusted number from its official website. Avoid using a number the caller provides.
• Do not send money or share financial information. A caller demanding payment to dismiss charges or process a domestic violence protective order is a warning sign of a scam.

• Report the scam. Contact the Florida Attorney General’s Office at 1-866-966-7226 or submit a complaint through its official website.
